Optimizing Discord Settings for World of Warcraft Raiders

However, setting up Discord involves more than just installing the app and joining a channel. From selecting the best microphone and headphones to adjusting your input and output settings for crystal-clear audio, we’ll cover all the essentials. Choosing the Right Hardware

Optimal sound quality is crucial for effective raid communication in World of Warcraft. Selecting the right microphone and headphones can significantly enhance your experience. Here’s how to choose the best equipment for your needs. This section assumes you use a separate mic from your headset. If you are using the mic on your headset you can just move on to the setting section to adjust it.

Microphones

USB Microphones: These types of microphones are the likes of Elgato Wave, Blue Yeti, Etc. Most players will go this route when they start out with an upgraded setup.

• Pros: USB microphones are plug-and-play, making them highly convenient and user-friendly. They generally offer good sound quality and are compatible with most computers without needing additional equipment. This is your most cost effective setup to get into the game.
• Cons: These microphones can sometimes lack the audio quality and customization options that professional XLR microphones provide.

XLR Microphones: XLR mics are dominated by companies like Shure and Audio-Technica. These are more pro level setups for people that want very high quality.

• Pros: XLR microphones are favored for their superior sound quality and flexibility in settings. They allow for detailed audio adjustments and are ideal for those seeking professional-level audio.
• Cons: They require additional equipment such as an audio interface or mixer, which adds to the cost and complexity of your setup.

Headphones

Bluetooth Headphones:

• Pros: Bluetooth headphones offer wireless convenience, removing the clutter of cables from your gaming setup. They provide freedom of movement and ease of use.
• Cons: Bluetooth headphones can sometimes suffer from latency, which may cause a delay in hearing game sounds or communications. Battery life can also be a limiting factor during long raid sessions.

Wired Headphones:

• Pros: Wired headphones typically offer the best sound quality with no latency issues. They are reliable for long gaming sessions as they do not require charging.
• Cons: The wires can create clutter and restrict movement, which might be inconvenient for some users.

Testing Your Hardware:

• After choosing your microphone and headphones, it’s crucial to test them extensively. Use Discord’s ‘Mic Test’ feature to evaluate how you sound, and spend some time adjusting the settings to optimize clarity and volume. This ensures that your communication is as clear as possible during raids.

Configuring Personal Discord Settings

Once you have your ideal hardware set up, the next crucial step is configuring your Discord settings to ensure you achieve the best possible sound quality. You can Do this in Discord by clicking the gear icon in the bottom left. 

Input and Output Settings

The Input Device setting is where you’re going to choose your Mic. Use the drop down and select the Mic you’re using whether its the one on your headset or a seperate mic. You usually want to leave the input volume at full where it is by default.

The Output Device is your headset or speakers that you want to hear others through. Generally you are setting this to your headphones but you can have it set to speakers if you aren’t going to be speaking. If you have it on speakers and you speak you will get echo’s and other audio problems for your teammates so this isn’t recommended. 

Once you have these set up to the correct hardware you can click the Lets Check button and speak. You should hear your voice clearly though your headphones. This is a great way to see how you sound. 

Lastly you will set up the Input Mode; Voice activity or Push to Talk. When I’m in a channel with friends and we’re openly speaking I just leave it on “Voice Activity“ This is an open Mic setup so that everything you say is transmitted to the channel you’re in. When I’m in a raid setting I use “Push to Talk“ This is a closed Mic setup and people can only hear you when you push your chosen button. For myself I use Alt. You can set up your button where is says “Shortcut“. When I push Alt, everyone in the channel can hear me and when I release the button it mutes me. This is best so that you aren’t inadvertently interrupting people when you aren’t speaking directly to them. 

 Advanced Options

 Generally speaking you can just copy the settings in the image above.

Sometimes if Discord is crashing a lot on you you can try turning the toggle off for Hardware Acceleration. This setting offloads Discord from your CPU to your GPU and can sometimes cause issues, though very rarely. If it works fine you are better to leave this setting turned on. 

Noise Suppression

This feature helps reduce unwanted background noise, such as keyboard clicks or ambient room sounds like fans or your dog chewing a bone. No one want to hear this. Krisp is the best setting as its a technology specifically designed to quiet your mic so that your voice is the only thing people hear. 

Echo Cancellation

If you or your team members notice an echo during communication, enabling this setting can help mitigate that effect. Almost always though you will want to turn this off unless there is an echo. 

Automatic Gain Control (AGC)

AGC adjusts the volume of your microphone automatically as you speak to maintain a consistent level, which can be useful in varying noise conditions. You can leave this setting alone most of the time. By default it is turned on.

Attenuation

This setting lowers the volume of other sounds when someone is speaking. It’s useful during intense raid moments where voice clarity is paramount. Most of the time you will leave this setting alone. 

Encourage feedback from your raid team and make adjustments during non-raid times to fine-tune your settings based on real interaction scenarios.

Handling Technical Issues

Even with optimal settings and equipment, technical issues can arise that disrupt communication during raids. Being prepared to quickly address and resolve these issues is crucial to maintaining the flow of the raid. Here are some common audio problems and their quick fixes.

Microphone Not Working

Check the Connection: Ensure your microphone is properly connected. If using a USB microphone, try unplugging it and plugging it back in. Often times the cable can be pulled out ever so slightly so that the connection is lost.

Discord Settings: Go to ‘User Settings’ -> ‘Voice & Video’ and make sure the correct microphone is selected as the input device. Connecting other devices, monitors etc, can sometimes automatically change the setting in Discord so this is a main culprit. 

Operating System Settings: Check your system’s sound settings to ensure the microphone is enabled and set as the default recording device.

Poor Sound Quality

Adjust Input Sensitivity: If your voice cuts out or if there’s too much background noise, adjust the input sensitivity in Discord.

Check Internet Connection: Poor sound quality can sometimes be due to a bad internet connection. Ensure your connection is stable and strong.

Echo or Feedback

Use Headphones: Ensure that all raid members are using headphones to prevent their speakers from feeding sound back into their microphones. This is almost always the issue with an echo; it’s a player using speakers and their mic is picking up the sound. If you have to use speakers then make sure you have Push To Talk enabled or your Mic is muted.

Adjust Echo Cancellation: Enable the echo cancellation feature in Discord’s ‘Voice & Video’ settings. If you have headphones on you will want to keep this turned off most of the time.

Delayed Audio

Reduce Number of Applications Running: Close unnecessary applications that may be using up system or network resources. Often this is an issue on older hardware where your computer is struggling to keep up while you are gaming so make sure things like your browser are closed. Also you can close applications running that you don’t need like Curseforge etc while you’re gaming. Most modern hardware is fine though and you can leave these things running.

Check for Updates: Ensure Discord and your audio drivers are up to date, as updates often include performance improvements and bug fixes.

Time to Raid
