The Assassination Rogue
MASTERING THE ASSASSINATION ROGUE: A COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE
The Assassination Rogue in Cataclysm excels as a potent single-target damage dealer, specializing in poison application to devastate their foes. Known for their signature ability, Mutilate, which deals substantial damage and generates multiple combo points, Assassination Rogues focus on maintaining lethal poison effects and maximizing the use of Envenom for sustained DPS. Their gameplay revolves around a meticulous balance of maintaining Rupture for its bleed effect while also ensuring that their energy regeneration and poison applications are optimized through talents like Venomous Wounds. The spec shines particularly in prolonged encounters, where they can sustain high damage outputs through careful management of their abilities and resources. Mastery of an Assassination Rogue demands precision in combo point management and an in-depth understanding of their rotation to maximize damage while seamlessly integrating defensive cooldowns like Cloak of Shadows and Evasion.

STAT PRIORITY FOR ASSASSINATION ROGUES
In the realm of Azeroth, Assassination Rogues thrive on precise and deadly attacks, heavily relying on their mastery of poisons and quick, relentless strikes. Understanding how to prioritize your stats is key to turning your Rogue into a formidable assassin. Here’s a breakdown of the stat priority for Assassination Rogues, emphasizing what each stat offers and its impact on your gameplay.
PRIMARY STATS
Weapon DPS: The foundation of your damage. High DPS weapons are crucial, as they significantly enhance the potency of your core abilities.
Agility: Your top stat, agility, not only boosts your attack power but also your critical hit chance, making it indispensable for elevating your DPS.
SECONDARY STATS
Hit Rating: The initial goal for rogues is to attain an 8% reduction in the chance to miss with special attacks, ensuring these never miss raid bosses. The target hit rating for this milestone is 961. However, investing points in the Precision talent significantly reduces the required hit rating. Specifically:
With 1 point in Precision, the requirement drops to 721 hit rating. With 2 points, it further reduces to 481 hit rating.
With the full 3 points in Precision, only 241 hit rating is needed—a value easily surpassed with level-appropriate gear.
Poison Hit Cap
The next threshold ensures your poisons never fail to apply (i.e., are not resisted), which requires a 17% hit chance. Poisons follow the spell hit rating conversion, which is 102.446 hit rating per 1% at level 85. Accordingly, the hit rating needed without Precision is 1742. This value adjusts based on points invested in Precision:
1/3 Precision: 1537 hit rating
2/3 Precision: 1332 hit rating
3/3 Precision: 1127 hit rating
Achieving this cap ensures the consistent application of poison effects, a significant component of rogue DPS.
Auto-Attack (White Damage) Hit Cap
The final and most demanding milestone is to eliminate the chance of missing with auto-attacks, requiring a 27% hit chance. Without Precision, this cap reaches an imposing 3243 hit rating. With a full 3/3 investment in Precision, the requirement decreases to 2523 hit rating. While hit rating consumables can further reduce this number, reaching the auto-attack hit cap remains challenging and is generally not considered feasible or necessary for optimal rogue performance.
Mastery
Following Agility, Mastery becomes your best friend by amplifying your poison damage. As poisons contribute significantly to your total DPS, elevating your Mastery stat can drastically increase your damage output.
Haste
Enhancing both your attack speed and energy regeneration, Haste supports a smoother and more efficient rotation. This stat is crucial for keeping up your Rupture and enabling as many Envenoms as possible.
Critical Strike
While important, Critical Strike falls to the bottom of the priority list for Assassination Rogues. Although it increases your chances of landing critical hits, the benefits it offers are overshadowed by the aforementioned stats.
Expertise
Expertise becomes less pivotal as it only marginally increases poison application by reducing dodge rates. Yet, maintaining a balance to avoid excessive dodges is beneficial.
REACHING STAT CAPS
Focusing first on meeting the spell hit cap ensures your poisons consistently affect your target, which is vital for your overall damage. Expertise, while beneficial, is less of a priority but should not be entirely neglected, especially in encounters where positioning makes you susceptible to dodges. Once these caps are met, prioritize Mastery for poison damage, followed by Haste for faster attacks and energy regeneration.
MASTERING YOUR TALENTS
Early on this build has more hit rating to get you to 8% faster but as you start getting a higher rating nearing 17% you can pull one point out of Precision and put it into Opportunity.
A GEM STRATEGY FOR ASSASSINATION ROGUES
For Assassination Rogues in Cataclysm, meticulously choosing the right gems and enchantments is crucial for maximizing DPS and efficiency in combat.
Epic gems are not available in phase one of Cataclysm
Meta Gem
Agile Shadowspirit Diamond: Offers +54 Agility and a 3% increase in Critical Damage, pivotal for maximizing overall damage output.
Red Gems
Delicate Queen's Garnet/Delicate Inferno Ruby: Provides +50 Agility/+40 Agility, respectively. As your primary stat, agility enhances both your attack power and critical strike chance, making these gems your go-to choice for red sockets.
Yellow Sockets
When the socket bonus contributes significantly to your agility or attack power, consider Deft Ember Topaz: +20 Agility and +20 Haste Rating. Haste is vital for Assassination Rogues as it increases your energy regeneration and poison application rate, crucial for maintaining high DPS.
For sockets where maximizing agility takes precedence, continue to use Delicate Queen’s Garnet/Delicate Inferno Ruby.
Blue Sockets
To capitalize on socket bonuses without sacrificing too much agility, opt for early on use Rigid Gems for hit to reach the early caps and then as you gear up you can switch to Glinting Shadow Spinel/Glinting Demonseye: +20 Agility and +20 Hit Rating. Ensuring you're at or near the hit cap is essential for Assassination Rogues to maximize their damage output, making these gems valuable for blue sockets.
If the socket bonus does not justify the loss of agility, sticking with Delicate Queen’s Garnet/Delicate Inferno Ruby remains the best option.
Gemming Summary
The primary focus for Assassination Rogues is to maximize agility through Delicate Queen’s Garnet/Delicate Inferno Ruby in red sockets. In yellow sockets, where the bonus augments agility or attack power, Deft Ember Topaz can be used to benefit from both the agility and haste rating. For blue sockets, Glinting Shadow Spinel/Glinting Demonseye are advisable to hit the hit cap without sacrificing agility, but only when the socket bonus is worthwhile. Otherwise, prioritize agility. The Chaotic Shadowspirit Diamond serves as the best meta gem option, significantly boosting DPS with its critical damage increase and agility bonus.

EFFECTIVE ROTATION AND STRATEGY FOR ASSASSINATION
Understanding and executing an effective rotation is crucial for maximizing an Assassination Rogue's damage output.
OPENING FROM STEALTH
Garrote: Start with Garrote to apply its bleed effect. This ensures you begin generating combo points and inflict damage over time right from the start but more importantly it regenerates energy from the Venomous Wounds Talent. More on that later.
Slice and Dice: Use early combo points to activate Slice and Dice, boosting your attack speed for sustained damage output.
Rupture: Next, make sure Rupture is applied to keep up the bleed effect, which again synergizes with your talents like Venomous Wounds for energy regeneration and additional damage.
Mutilate: Continue with Mutilate to quickly generate more combo points.
Envenom is your finishing move: Use Envenom to deal significant instant damage and to refresh your Slice and Dice duration through the Cut to the Chase talent and to apply the envenom debuff. Only use this with 4+ combo points.
Combo Point Accumulation Strategy
Initial Combat Phase (Health > 35%): Prioritize Mutilate for combo point generation, exploiting its optimal energy-to-combo point ratio.
Execution Combat Phase (Health < 35%): Transition to Backstab to exploit the Murderous Intent Talent. Below 35% health your backstab will refund 30 energy when you strike your target from behind. This results in smashing out extra Envenoms. If you find yourself close to the energy cap just Mutilate like normal to spend energy then switch back to backstab.
Finishing Move Hierarchy
Rupture: Maintain this bleed effect consistently, using any accumulated combo points prior to expiration. The reason to keep this up is Venomous Wounds. Venomous Wounds is a crucial talent for Assassination Rogues in Cataclysm, enhancing their damage-over-time abilities. When Rupture or Garrote are on a target afflicted by the rogue's poisons, Venomous Wounds grants a chance for each tick of these abilities to restore 10 Energy and deal additional Nature damage. This talent is pivotal for maintaining high Energy levels, allowing for a more fluid rotation and consistent damage output, making it a staple in the Assassination Rogue's arsenal for maximizing efficiency in PvE combat.
Envenom: Implement with 4-5 combo points, concurrently refreshing Slice and Dice. Envenom also leaves a debuff on your target for 5 seconds that increases poison applications more quickly so try not to overlap envenoms within that 5 second window. If you suddenly have enough CPs and there is time on this then pool energy until the debuff drops unless you're nearing the energy cap.
Multi-Target Engagement Protocol
Transition to a Fan of Knives-centric approach for groups exceeding four targets, diverging from singular target methodologies.
Poison Application Protocol
Affix Instant Poison to the main hand and Deadly Poison to the off-hand, optimizing for maximal damage throughput. Unlike Wrath you put your slow weapon in the main hand and your fastest weapon in your offhand.
For area engagement, ensure Deadly Poison is also applied to the thrown weapon, enhancing Fan of Knives efficacy.
Cooldown Utilization
Cold Blood: Deploy with a 5-combo point Envenom for peak damage. Note also that Cold Blood now grants 25 energy so try not to use while near the energy cap.
Redirect is a ability on a 1 minute CD that allows you to redirect your combo points to another target so you can switch targets and continue to attack without losing those combo points.
Vanish: Engage proactively to exploit the Overkill bonus, exiting stealth with Garrote for enhanced efficiency. Overkill gives you increased energy gains for 20 seconds and Garrote applies more venomous Wounds for even more energy.
Vendetta: Activate on cooldown or when you need a boost to burn something. Stay on the target you use it on as it applies to your current target only. Coordinate with periods of increased boss vulnerability for extra damage.
Advanced Rotation Insights
Energy replenishes at a base rate of 10 per second, augmented by haste and specific abilities such as Backstab. Strategic Envenom usage during heightened energy regeneration phases is crucial for maintaining DPS output.
Combo points are primarily generated through Mutilate and Backstab, with Seal Fate augmenting this process through critical strikes.
Poison and Weapon Optimization
Prefer Instant Poison on the main hand to clap your target for heavy damage. Your main hand should be slow, hitting for more damage.
Apply Deadly Poison on the off-hand to maximize damage over time effects as your off hand should be faster and while doing less damage per hit it will apply more poison for stacks.
For multiple targets, apply Deadly Poison on the thrown weapon to apply DoTs to all targets around you with Fan of Knives.
Mastering Defensive Cooldowns and Raid Utility
In Cataclysm, rogue expertise extends beyond dealing damage to encompass vital support and utility roles within parties and raids. Understanding defensive cooldowns and raid utility is paramount for expert rogue players, ensuring their effectiveness in various encounters. Among the buffs and debuffs at their disposal, Tricks of the Trade stands out as a crucial tool, boosting a teammate's damage output significantly, thereby accelerating the pace of encounters and aiding in defeating bosses swiftly. While Expose Armor may not often be applied directly by rogues, its armor reduction effect contributes to increasing the overall damage dealt by the raid, especially against heavily armored foes. Master Poisoner enhances spell damage taken by enemies, a valuable debuff that synergizes with other classes' abilities to amplify damage output. Meanwhile, "Mind-numbing Poison" and "Wound Poison" provide utility by slowing cast speed and reducing enemy healing, respectively, aiding in crowd control and mitigating enemy sustain.
Utility
In terms of utility, abilities like Disarm Trap and Dismantle enable rogues to handle environmental hazards and disarm enemy combatants, respectively, showcasing their versatility beyond combat. Crowd control capabilities, including "Cheap Shot," "Kidney Shot," and "Sap," offer invaluable control over enemy movements and actions, granting the party strategic advantages during encounters. Survival tools like Sprint, Cloak of Shadows, and Evasion not only enhance the rogue's survivability but also allow them to navigate encounters more effectively, avoiding deadly mechanics and staying agile in combat. Finally, Feint serves as a crucial damage mitigation tool, reducing incoming AoE damage and helping the rogue maintain their health pool during intense encounters. Mastering these defensive cooldowns and raid utility abilities empowers expert rogue players to not only survive challenging encounters but also contribute significantly to their party or raid's success in Cataclysm content.

Do you still put your fast weapon in the main hand and slow in off in Cata?
Hey Half, you do not. In Cataclysm you go back to normal. Main hand is slow with Insta poison and off hand is fast with Deadly.
Do you think Ass will be the best or is combat going to be better with BF?
We’ll see what happens but I think Assassination will be very strong most of the time in P1. Combat should start to ramp up in Firelands. That’s how it was the first time around in OG anyhow but things have been different in classic so we’ll see. I’m undecided with Sub and where it’ll stand but I think its gonna surprise people. Ass is usually good early on because it does a lot of nature damage that by passes armor.
Hope that helps!
I checked out tue numb2r one Parse on 362 Ilevel as assa rogue and he Uses slow oh and fast mh. Gets more instant poisons in than I do and gets more deadly poison damage. What do you think?
