A STAT STRAT FOR COMBAT ROGUES

Agility

Agility stands at the pinnacle for Combat Rogues. It’s the cornerstone stat that directly contributes to your attack power and critical strike chance. Maximizing agility is paramount, as it significantly boosts your overall damage output.

Hit Rating & Expertise: The Foundation

Hit Rating: Initially, aim for an 8% hit chance (equivalent to 961 Hit Rating) to ensure your special attacks always hit raid bosses. Precision talent can lower this requirement significantly, making it easier to achieve. With full Precision (3/3), you only need 241 Hit Rating.

Expertise Rating: Essential to prevent your attacks from being dodged, targeting 26 Expertise guarantees your assaults will land. This stat is crucial for maintaining uninterrupted damage flow against raid bosses.

Haste

Haste accelerates your attack speed and energy regeneration, crucial for executing as many damaging attacks as possible, especially under the influence of Bandit’s Guile. Balancing Haste properly ensures a smoother rotation and more consistent damage output.

Mastery

While not as high prio as Haste, Mastery becomes a good stat by enhancing the trigger for your Main Gauche ability. Every point of mastery increases this trigger by 2%.

Critical Strike

The least prioritized stat for Combat Rogues, Critical Strike still plays a role by increasing the likelihood of landing critical hits. While it’s beneficial, other stats offer greater returns on investment for enhancing your damage.

Reaching Stat Caps

First, focus on meeting the 8% hit chance to ensure your special attacks never miss, adjusting for Precision as needed. Next, aim for the poison hit cap at 17% to ensure your poisons consistently apply. This translates to different Hit Rating requirements based on your Precision investment. Surpassing these thresholds, prioritize Mastery for poison damage amplification, followed by Haste for improved attack speed and energy regeneration. Expertise also plays a critical role up to its cap, ensuring your attacks always connect.

MASTERING THE ROTATION: A COMBAT ROGUE’S GUIDE

For Combat Rogues, efficiency in combat transcends mere strikes; it’s about the harmonious balance between maintaining buffs, managing resources, and deploying finishers with precision. This guide dives deep into the art of rotation for Combat Rogues, laying out a strategy for maximizing damage output in both single-target and multi-target scenarios.

The newest rotations look a lot different but this will be updated as we learn more. It’s looking like Revealing Strike is used for your 4th combo point and then use Gouge for the 5th point; Eviscerate. With the glyph and the points in the talent tree you can use Gouge from any position and it only costs 15 energy so its a very low cost filler. Again, as this rotation evolves, so will the guide.

CORE ROTATION PRINCIPLES

Opening Moves: Initiate with Garrote for no specific advantage or directly engage with Sinister Strike to start building Combo Points.

Slice and Dice (SnD): Maintain at all times for increased attack speed, vital for sustained damage. Utilize at least 1 CP for SnD; however, higher CPs extend its duration, reducing the frequency of reapplication. Aim for 4-5 CPs for longer uptime.

Revealing Strike (RvS) and Gouge: Use RvS at 3 or 4 Combo Points and then gouge for the last combo point to get to 5. Preferably you will RvS when you get to 3 for a 4th point and then gouge for a 5th. Sometimes Sinister Strike will proc and you’ll be at 4CP so just RvS in that situation and finish with eviscerate.

We are using gouge to get our 5th combo point at a very low cost of 15 energy as opposed to a Sinister Strike at 40 energy. It has a 10s cooldown so you can only use it once per rotation and that’s why we use it to get the 5th point.

Eviscerate: Use a 5-Combo Point Eviscerate to finish your rotation.

Bandit’s Guile Insight: Leverage the phases of Bandit’s Guile for damage boosts. Use Redirect to maintain insight when switching targets.

Opening The Fight

The opening rotation is build to 5CPS, Killing Spree, Pop Adrenaline Rush then hit your Eviscerate to finish. You want to pop AR before Eviscerate so that you reduce its cooldowns from the Restless Blades talent. Restless blades reduces your cooldowns for every CP spent in a finishing move.

After this open you can just roll into your regular rotation. Use AR and Killing Spree on cooldown unless there is a burn phase you need to save these for. Also make sure that Killing spree is appropriate as sometimes it can kill you ie, drop you off a ledge behind a boss like Magmaw. Most Rogues have come across a KS Snafu at some point or another 😉

ADVANCED ROTATION TECHNIQUES

Expose Armor (EA): Apply if essential armor debuffs are missing in your raid composition, for overall raid DPS gain.

Multi-Target Situations: Activate Blade Flurry strategically when you have to opportunity to cleave multiple adds or bosses. Toggle it on when adds are in range to cleave then toggle it off when its single target. When BF is toggled on you get a haste debuff so you don’t just want to leave it on unless you are getting the benefit from hitting multiple targets.

Redirect: Redirect is a ability on a 1 minute CD that allows you to redirect your combo points to another target so you can switch targets and continue to attack without losing those combo points.

Bandit Guile

Managing Bandit’s Guile: Bandit’s Guile is a fundamental mechanic for Combat Rogues, dictating a cycle of buffs that enhance damage dealt to the current target. The cycle progresses through four stages:

Initially you start with baseline damage output.

Shallow Insight: Provides a 10% increase in damage.

Moderate Insight: Elevates damage by 20%.

Deep Insight: Offers the highest boost, providing a 30% increase in damage.

Triggers for BG

To advance through these stages, the Rogue must execute a combination of Sinister Strike and Revealing Strike on the target. Four consecutive strikes trigger Shallow Insight or the progression to the next buff level. However, for Shallow Insight and Moderate Insight, maintaining the cycle requires consistent attacks every 15 seconds; otherwise, the buff resets to its initial state, your baseline damage. Deep Insight cannot be refreshed and expires after 15 seconds, necessitating a return to the baseline damage level.

Furthermore, switching targets resets the Bandit’s Guile cycle, while using Redirect on a new target transfers the current buff to the new adversary. While the cycle is largely autonomous, skilled Rogues can optimize damage output by timing their cooldowns to align with the highest buff stage. This strategic approach can significantly enhance your damage.

Cooldown Management

Cooldown management is a crucial aspect for Combat Rogues to maximize their DPS:

Adrenaline Rush

Adrenaline Rush increases your energy regeneration rate significantly for a short period. When activated, it allows for a more aggressive use of abilities, ensuring you can perform more actions in a shorter time frame. Ideally, use Adrenaline Rush when your energy is low to maximize its benefits, as it instantly boosts your energy regeneration, allowing you to capitalize on the heightened ability to execute your rotation without delay.

Killing Spree

Killing Spree transports you behind your target, delivering multiple hits in rapid succession. It’s a potent burst damage tool that, importantly, does not consume energy meaning you can use it with lower energy and you’ll continue to regenerate that energy as it does damage. It’s best used when Bandit’s Guile is at its deeper insight stages (preferably during “Red Insight”) to maximize damage output, or when you need to quickly focus down an important target.

Both cooldowns should be synchronized with the Bandit’s Guile progression, ideally deploying them when you’re at higher Insight levels to maximize your damage output.

Poison Strategy: Always use Instant Poison on your main-hand, Deadly Poison on your off-hand, and thrown weapon. Having deadly on your thrown weapon will allow you to apply DP dots on many targets within range.

Mastering Defensive Cooldowns and Raid Utility

In Cataclysm, rogue expertise extends beyond dealing damage to encompass vital support and utility roles within parties and raids. Understanding defensive cooldowns and raid utility is paramount for expert rogue players, ensuring their effectiveness in various encounters. Among the buffs and debuffs at their disposal, Tricks of the Trade stands out as a crucial tool, boosting a teammate’s damage output significantly, thereby accelerating the pace of encounters and aiding in defeating bosses swiftly. While Expose Armor may not often be applied directly by rogues, its armor reduction effect contributes to increasing the overall damage dealt by the raid, especially against heavily armored foes.

Master Poisoner enhances spell damage taken by enemies, a valuable debuff that synergizes with other classes’ abilities to amplify damage output. Meanwhile, “Mind-numbing Poison” and “Wound Poison” provide utility by slowing cast speed and reducing enemy healing, respectively, aiding in crowd control and mitigating enemy sustain.

Utility

In terms of utility, abilities like Disarm Trap and Dismantle enable rogues to handle environmental hazards and disarm enemy combatants, respectively, showcasing their versatility beyond combat. Crowd control capabilities, including “Cheap Shot,” “Kidney Shot,” and “Sap,” offer invaluable control over enemy movements and actions, granting the party strategic advantages during encounters. Survival tools like Sprint, Cloak of Shadows, and Evasion not only enhance the rogue’s survivability but also allow them to navigate encounters more effectively, avoiding deadly mechanics and staying agile in combat. Finally, Feint serves as a crucial damage mitigation tool, reducing incoming AoE damage and helping the rogue maintain their health pool during intense encounters. Mastering these defensive cooldowns and raid utility abilities empowers expert rogue players to not only survive challenging encounters but also contribute significantly to their party or raid’s success in Cataclysm content.

Time to slay.
