THE VALIONA AND THERALION ENCOUNTER

Mastering the Twin Drakes: Valiona and Theralion Encounter Guide

Introduction

In the Cataclysm expansion, the encounter with Valiona and Theralion in the Throne of the Four Winds presents a unique challenge with its dual-phase mechanics. This involves two dragons with a shared health pool. Our guide will help you navigate through their devastating abilities and manage the transitions between the ground and air phases effectively.

Raid Composition and Health Pools

For a 10-man normal difficulty, Valiona and Theralion have a combined health of 25.8 million. Teams typically consist of one tank, three healers, and six DPS. On heroic difficulty, their health doubles to 48.1 million, and the composition may shift to include an extra tank or DPS depending on the group’s needs. In 25-man normal difficulty, the dragons’ health increases to 78.3 million with a standard group of one tank, six healers, and eighteen DPS. Heroic mode for 25-man ramps up the health to 164 million with two tanks, up to seven healers, and sixteen or seventeen DPS. Regardless of the group size, the encounter has a ten-minute enrage timer.

Encounter Overview

The fight against Valiona and Theralion features two main phases that rotate several times throughout the encounter. Valiona starts on the ground in the first phase. Theralion takes flight and bombards the raid from above. After 100 seconds, they switch roles, initiating Theralion’s ground phase. This lasts for 140 seconds. Alternating patterns continues until the dragons are defeated or the raid is wiped.

Valiona’s Ground Phase

The encounter begins with Valiona on the ground. This phase is critical as it sets the tone for the encounter. It involves complex damage distribution and movement mechanics.

Valiona’s Melee and Blackout

Valiona’s regular melee attacks deal significant damage (25k in 10-man and 35-40k in 25-man) to her primary target, usually the tank. Tanks will need robust healing and occasional cooldown support to manage this damage intake.

Blackout is a pivotal ability during this phase. Valiona targets a random player, inflicting them with a debuff that absorbs a set amount of healing. Upon expiration or when dispelled, Blackout releases a burst of shadow damage. This is divided among all players within 8 yards. Proper handling involves the targeted player signaling the raid to stack quickly to share the damage. The raid collapses in for the blast and then moves out immediately after the debuff is cleared. You need to move quickly after to avoid unnecessary damage from other area effects that precede it, especially Devouring Flames.

Devouring Flames

Valiona periodically casts Devouring Flames, a breath attack that inflicts 90,000 shadow damage to anyone caught in front of her. The damage diminishes with distance, so awareness and quick movement are key. The raid must watch Valiona’s orientation as she will turn towards a random direction before casting.
Move swiftly either to her sides or beyond the reach of the breath to minimize damage. Avoid clustering too far away as that could complicate repositioning for Blackout and other mechanics.

Theralion’s Aerial Assaults

While Valiona is grounded, Theralion provides aerial support with Twilight Blast and Dazzling Destruction. Twilight Blast targets random players every two seconds. This ability deals damage to them and their nearby allies within 8 yards. This necessitates maintaining a spread formation around Valiona to minimize the impact of Twilight Blast. Immediate movement out of the affected area if targeted. If you don’t move you will kill your teammates.

Dazzling Destruction marks the transition towards the end of Valiona’s ground phase. Theralion casts it three times in succession, Each of these create two large void zones that deal immense damage and transport players to the Twilight Realm if not avoided by 12 yards. Quickly find and move out of the void zones. Positional awareness will ensure you are not between Valiona and a void zone, as her next ability could push you into it.

Positioning and Movement Tips

The raid should be loosely spread around Valiona to deal with Twilight Blast effectively. Designate a stacking point for Blackout that is safe and accessible for quick group mitigation. Use marked players or predefined spots to organize the spread. This ensures everyone knows where to be during Twilight Blasts and where to converge for Blackout.

Melee players need to be particularly vigilant of Devouring Flames. They should position themselves such that they can quickly move out of the projected area. Devouring Flames requires rapid lateral movement. Positioning Valiona perpendicular to the largest open area can give the raid more room to maneuver.

Entering the Twilight Realm

Players are transported to the Twilight Realm by failing to move out of the void zones created by Theralion’s Dazzling Destruction. This also happens by collecting more than 5 stacks of Twilight Shift in heroic. These void zones appear as large pink circles on the ground, and players caught in these when the cast completes are sent to the Twilight Realm.

The realm is scattered with moving shadow orbs. Contact with these orbs results in heavy Shadow damage, so players must dodge them while navigating the realm. The realm contains several Collapsing Twilight Portals. Players must locate these portals, which appear as swirling vortexes on the ground, and click them to return to the Normal Realm.

Challenges

The main challenge in the Normal mode Twilight Realm is the environmental hazard posed by the shadow orbs and the urgency of finding an exit before succumbing to the stacking damage debuff, Twilight Zone, which increases Shadow damage taken. Heroic differences described later and are additional to these mechanics.

Transition Considerations

As the phase nears completion at around 85 seconds, Theralion’s Dazzling Destruction becomes the priority. The raid needs to be ready to move from the marked locations quickly to avoid being sent to the Twilight Realm. This part of the fight tests the raid’s ability to switch from a spread to a mobile formation seamlessly.

Theralion’s Ground Phase

Following Valiona’s ground phase, Theralion descends to engage the raid directly. This phase, lasting 140 seconds, demands precise execution of movement and positioning due to Theralion’s abilities, which focus heavily on area control and managing debuffs.

Theralion’s Melee and Engulfing Magic

Theralion’s melee attacks are potent, striking the tank every 2 seconds with substantial force (approximately 25k in 10-man and 35-40k in 25-man). This necessitates continuous, focused healing on the tank, along with strategic use of damage mitigation cooldowns to manage the incoming damage.

Engulfing Magic poses a unique challenge, targeting one caster or healer (two in 25-man setups) multiple times throughout the phase. This debuff increases the target’s damage and healing output by 100% but also causes all damage and healing they do to harm allies nearby that caster an equal amount. The affected player must quickly distance themselves from others by at least 10 yards. Once Isolated pop any CDS and utilize the damage or healing boost for high output spells and abilities. Heal or smash! Rejoin the group when the debuff expires. Make sure you don’t trigger harmful effects on re-entry. If you’re casting within 10 yards of player you will delete them in a hurry.

Fabulous Flames

Every 15 seconds, Theralion targets a random raid member, usually at ranged, to cast Fabulous Flames. This ability creates a persistent damaging zone on the ground that deals high shadow damage. Obviously don’t stand in this! Ranged and healers should maintain a minimum distance of 10 yards from Theralion to avoid unnecessary movement if targeted. Immediately move if targeted by Fabulous Flames.  Moving perpendicular to the usual raid spread will minimize disruption. Be awareness of your surroundings to make sure there are safe zones for movement as Fabulous Flames accumulates on the ground.

Twilight Meteorite

Twilight Meteorite is an ability that targets random raid members every 6 seconds with a debuff that lasts for 6 seconds. When the debuff expires, it inflicts a high amount of Shadow damage. This is split among all players within 6 yards of the target. The key to managing this ability is for the targeted player to quickly move to a pre-designated “soak group,” Typically this is the melee group positioned behind Theralion. Stacking will evenly distribute the damage across multiple players. So, If you are targeted then you should collapse in to melee, soak with them, and then move back out to ranged.

The casting of Twilight Meteorite stops 95 seconds into the Theralion Phase as Valiona prepares to cover the arena with Twilight Flames.

Positioning and Movement Tips

Maintain a tight melee group directly behind Theralion to manage Twilight Meteorite effectively. This setup makes sure the debuff is soaked by multiple players. Ranged DPS and healers should form a semi-circle around Theralion. Maximize coverage for quick movement out of Fabulous Flames. You should be keeping enough distance to mitigate Engulfing Magic’s impact. Designate clear zones for those affected by Engulfing Magic to retreat to. This will make sure they can continue to contribute without harming others.

Regularly adjust the raid’s position relative to the accumulating Fabulous Flames to make sure safe spaces are always available for handling subsequent casts.

As the phase progresses towards its 95-second mark, Valiona begins her sequence of Twilight Flames. This covers large sections of the room with damaging fire. Managing this involves proactive movement based on Valiona’s positioning overhead. She will target so look up and see where she is. Clear communication from a designated spotter who can direct the raid to move to safe zones is the key.

Heroic Mode Changes

Increased Health Pools: Both Valiona and Theralion have increased health, nearly doubling from their Normal mode counterparts.

Enhanced Damage Output: All of Valiona and Theralion’s abilities inflict more damage. This includes Twilight Meteorite, Devouring Flames, Blackout, and all of Theralion’s ground phase attacks. The increased damage output puts pressure on healers and requires the raid to execute mechanics to avoid deaths.

Twilight Zone and Twilight Shift Complexities: Heroic mode introduces a debuff called Twilight Shift, stacking on the tank and other players. This increases their Shadow damage taken. Upon reaching five stacks, Twilight Shift triggers Shifting Reality, teleporting the affected players into the Twilight Realm. Managing these stacks requires precise tank swaps and controlled movement. This is how you prevent chaotic transitions that leave the raid scrambling to reposition to a new tank.

New Adds – Twilight Sentries: These adds spawn in the Twilight Realm and cast Rift Blast, targeting random players across both realms. Efficient management involves periodic excursions by designated raid groups into the Twilight Realm to kill these adds, requiring careful timing to manage the Twilight Zone debuff and avoid overwhelming the raid with Rift Blasts.

Heroic Strategy Adjustments

Stack Management: Tanks and designated players will need to manage their Twilight Shift stacks to control their transitions into the Twilight Realm.  Make sure that they do not coincide with critical phases of the fight, such as high-damage periods or when major abilities like Blackout or Engulfing Magic are being handled.

Add Control: Teams assigned to enter the Twilight Realm must target and kill Twilight Sentries. Killing them quickly minimizes the impact of their Rift Blasts on the raid. This task should be balanced with the necessity to return to the normal realm. Find balance because you need to beat the enrage timer so you’re needed on the bosses too.

Damage Mitigation: Due to the increased damage from all sources, cooldown management becomes even more critical. Healers and tanks must coordinate their defensive and healing cooldowns to survive abilities like Blackout and Twilight Meteorite.

Enhanced Coordination for Engulfing Magic and Meteorite: Players affected by Engulfing Magic need to isolate themselves to avoid damaging others, while still contributing to the raid’s output. Simultaneously, Twilight Meteorite handling must be flawless.
